FinanceAsia interviewed Dr. Jean-Marc F. Blanchard for story on Chinese outbound foreign direct investment

On August 12, 2025, FinanceAsia interviewed Founding Executive Director of the Mr. & Mrs. S.H. Wong Center for the Study of Multinational Corporations Dr. Jean-Marc F. Blanchard for a story pondering the links between China’s domestic economic forces such as weak domestic demand and Chinese outward foreign direct investment (FDI).  Dr. Blanchard stated China’s challenging internal economic situation propels and constrains Chinese outward FDI (OFDI), noting, in regard to the former, that Chinese companies use OFDI to tap markets, jump trade barriers, and exploit free trade agreements and, in regard to the latter, that it limits access to financing.  He also observed that he thought the benefits flowing from Chinese OFDI would not address China’s economic issues like a weak property market in any substantive way.
