Executive Director Jean-Marc F. Blanchard interviewed for The Diplomat article about US-China Foreign Direct Investment Dynamics

Dr. Jean-Marc F. Blanchard, Founding Executive Director of the Mr. & Mrs. S.H. Wong Center for the Study of Multinational Corporations, was interviewed for an article in the The Diplomat. Dr. Blanchard offered his thoughts about the state of China-United States (US) foreign direct investment (FDI) and how various dynamics in China and the US and between the two countries might affect FDI going forward. For example, he commented on how China’s 14th Five-Year Plan, China’s emphasis on self-reliance, and the intensified drive towards reshoring might (or might not) affect FDI. Dr. Blanchard saw some positive trends, but also highlighted a number of political and economic factors that might adversely affect FDI patterns. In the interview, he also distilled numerous challenges facing Beijing and Washington as they sought to realize their national security, economic, and technological goals without damaging their ability to profit from FDI as a recipient or sender.
