Dr. Blanchard shared his insights about various issues—e.g., the quest for supply chain resiliency, the opening up of various sectors like the financial services industry, improvements in China’s intellectual property rights (IPR) regime, and the US desire for more manufacturing to be done within its territorial confines—that are influencing bilateral economic ties in areas like FDI. He further gave opinions about what might be needed for China and the US to cooperate under the auspices of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Dr. Jean-Marc F. Blanchard, Founding Executive Director of the Mr. & Mrs. S.H. Wong Center for the Study of Multinational Corporations, was interviewed for an article in the The Diplomat. Dr. Blanchard offered his thoughts about the state of China-United States (US) foreign direct investment (FDI) and how various dynamics in China and the US and between the two countries might affect FDI going forward. For example, he commented on how China’s 14th Five-Year Plan, China’s emphasis on self-reliance, and the intensified drive towards reshoring might (or might not) affect FDI. Dr. Jean-Marc F. Blanchard, Founding Executive Director of the Mr. & Mrs. S.H. Wong Center for the Study of Multinational Corporations, was interviewed for a Financial Times story examining China's continuing success in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) despite Covid-19 and political tensions between the United States and China. The story highlighted China's continuing economic growth, strength in particular economic sectors like logistics, and opening of certain sectors such as financial services as drivers of the positive inward FDI data. Outward FDI presented a different story and has not approached the highs of 2015 to 2017 for multiple reasons, two of which were, as Dr. Blanchard noted, sensitivity about capital outflows (which still persists to some extent today) as well as a crackdown on some private Chinese companies such as Anbang and HNA that had been big players in China's OFDI surge during the aforementioned period.

To quote the report home page, "China has been wooing littoral states in hopes of securing new markets for its goods and investing in infrastructure projects. But some worry that there is more to Chinese actions in the region than meets the eye. The worry is that China will increase its political and diplomatic clout in a region that is considered vital for Russian interests and create tension between Moscow and Washington.
