China Expands the BRI in the Caribbean: Jamaica on the Mind

In April 2019, Jamaica signed on to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The two countries have had a positive relationship in recent years, with Chinese companies and banks active in the Caribbean country through such actions as Jiuquan Iron and Steel (JISCO)’s acquisition of Alpart in 2016, the proposed development of an Industrial Park and Special Economic Zone, and the completion of two state-of-the art early childhood institutions.

China Needs to Rethink its Game

One factor that has allowed China to expand its global role has been financial diplomacy in the form of loans, business deals and other investments. However, in overlooking issues such as public discontent with dictatorships, corruption and economic mismanagement, Chinese companies have also assumed considerable risk.

China and Latin America–A Changing Relationship

During the early years of the 21st century Chinese multinational companies (MNCs) actively engaged in Latin America. An abundance of natural resources and a growing Latin American middle class fit China’s needs for essential raw materials and a growing Latin American middle class fit the Asian country’s need for overseas markets. In turn, Latin America was able to diversify export markets for its oil, copper and soybeans.
