Hambantota Port is a port, entailing berths, terminals, dockyards, fuel tanks, and a special economic zone, in Sri Lanka’s south. It has been built up since 2010 with heavy Chinese involvement in engineering, financing, construction, and operations. It has fueled much controversy because of a long-term lease given to a China Merchant Ports Holding in return for debt relief and its status as a symbol of China’s rising regional role.
