At the end of May, Dr. Jean-Marc F. Blanchard, Executive Director of the Mr. & Mrs. S.H. Wong Center for the Study of Multinational Corporations (Wong MNC Center) participated in a panel called “The Art of Attracting Investments and Doing Business in the Baltic Sea Region” at the international 10th Baltic Sea Region Forum orchestrated by the Centrum Balticum and held in Turku, Finland. On the panel, which involved academics/researchers, investment promotion professionals, and policymakers from Finland, Russia, Sweden, the United States, and elsewhere, Dr. Blanchard shared his thoughts about the drivers of East Asian investment in the region and regional countries, the policies countries in the region might adopt to attract more East Asian investment, and the collaborative initiatives that Baltic region countries might embrace at the regional level to attract more East Asian investment.

The Mr. & Mrs. S.H. Wong Center for the Study of Multinational Corporations (Wong MNC Center) sponsored a panel entitled “China’s Evolving Trade and Investment Relations with Latin America” at the Association of Chinese Political Studies 30th annual meeting held in June 2017 in Tianjin, China. Participants on the well-attended panel included Wong MNC Center Executive Director Dr. Jean-Marc F. Blanchard who spoke about Brazil’s foreign policy towards China, Mr. Javier Luque who analyzed the factors shaping Argentine-China investment relations, and Dr. Jose Luis Leon-Manriquez who undertook a comparative analysis of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean investment in Latin America. The April 2017 issue of Geopolitics (Vol. 22, No. 2, 2017), a leading journal in the field, will feature a special section on The Geopolitics of China's Maritime Silk Road Initiative (MSRI) that focused on the MSRI and South Asia. The special section provides background on the MSRI, surveys China's economic and political goals at the national and sub-national level, and identifies a number of number of the political and economic factors at the national and sub-national level within and beyond China that will affect the implementation of China's ambitious scheme. The special section contains considers the political and economic implications if China's MSRI actually gives it new access to the Indian Ocean, looks at India's economic and strategic perceptions of the China's MSRI, and situated the MSRI in the context of China's evolving market system. The authors include academics and researchers from Australia, China, India, and the United States.

Mr. Courtland Johnson (USA), a first-year M.A. student with the School of Advanced International and Area Studies at East China Normal University (China), and Ms. Xue XIA , a senior in finance at Wenzhou-Kean University (China), have joined the Mr. & Mrs. S.H. Wong Center for the Study of Multinational Corporations (Wong MNC Center) as Research Assistants. Courtland and Xue will assist with the Wong MNC Center's weekly news summaries, various data gathering, analysis, and presentation projects, and various special research tasks. Dr. Bas Hooijmaaijers has become Assistant Director of the Wong MNC Center. He also serves as Assistant Professor and Chenhui Research Fellow in the School of Advanced International and Area Studies at East China Normal University (China). He has published on China and the BRICS in leading journals including the Journal of Common Market Studies and Global Governance, and has contributed to ad hoc studies for the European Parliament. His research activities include projects on European Union policymaking towards China, Chinese investment in Europe, and the global power shift towards the Asia-Pacific Region.
