China's Maritime Silk Road Initiative, Africa, and the Middle East: Unpacking Political and Economic Dynamics at a time of Global Transitions

At a time when the world is in flux and China seems to have assumed the mantle of global economic leadership with its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), it is important to delve into the BRI’s components including the vital Maritime Silk Road Initiative (MSRI), which represents the sea route of the BRI and runs from Southeast Asia through South Asia to Africa and Middle East and then to Europe. In recognition of this, the Mr. & Mrs. S.H. Wong Center for the Study of Multinational Corporations (USA) has organized a 1-1/2 day international conference that will examine the politico-economic dimensions of the MSRI with a special emphasis on Africa and the Middle East. The conference, which features presentations by experts from China, Africa, the Middle East, and elsewhere, is co-sponsored and hosted by the School of Advanced International and Area Studies at East China Normal University (ECNU). It will take place from Saturday, November 18 to Sunday, November 19, 2017 on the campus of ECNU (Shanghai, China) and follows highly successful conferences held in 2015 and 2016 that looked at the MSRI in other regions. Attendees, who will include policy analysts, businesspeople, scholars, and others, will gain a better understanding of the features of the MSRI, particularly in Africa and the Middle East, its implications for the region and elsewhere, its bilateral dynamics, the role of Chinese multinational corporations in the scheme, and the factors that will influence its development in Africa and the Middle East.
